Viola 2021

The proportions of this model are derived from a cutdown Antonio and Girolamo (“Brothers”) Amati viola played by the soloist Walter Trampler. I reduced the size proportionally from Trampler’s instrument, which even though cutdown still had a rather large 44.45cm length body. The shortened upper bouts are one way in which making reaching high positions on a viola can be made a little less of a strain, this was a significant feature of Trampler’s cutdown instrument that I retained in my reduced size instrument with a body length of 414mm. For ease of bowing I shortened the corners slightly; although long corners are very elegant, they can be a nuisance.
